The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has officially kicked off construction of the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extensiona major infrastructure project set to dramatically improve daily travel between Thane and South Mumbai. The announcement was made on X, marking the start of one of the region’s most transformative roadway upgrades.
A 13.9 km, Fully Elevated, High-Speed Corridor
The upcoming corridor will stretch 13.9 kmentirely elevated, and feature six high-speed lanes. Once operational, the freeway will reduce travel time between Thane and South Mumbai to just 25–30 minutes—a significant improvement over current peak-hour journeys that often exceed 60–90 minutes.
The Eastern Express Highway (EEH), one of Mumbai’s most critical and congested arterial routes, currently handles lakhs of commuters daily. The new extension is expected to ease that burden significantly and create a faster, smoother, and more reliable alternative.
Seamless Connectivity Across Mumbai’s Busiest Junctions
The freeway extension will connect Anand Nagar in Thane to Chheda Nagar in Ghatkoparlinking several key junctions along the way, including:
- Mulund
- Airoli
- Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR)
- Vikhroli
- Kanjurmarg
- Mankhurd
- Ghatkopar
In Thane, the corridor will merge with the ongoing Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road near the former Mulund Octroi Naka, creating a continuous, uninterrupted high-speed link.
Importantly, the route will also provide streamlined onward access to the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Highwayenhancing long-distance connectivity for both passenger and freight movement.

Once complete, the project promises multiple long-term benefits:
