Recalling the infamous ‘ cake scene ’ in the film, she shared how the violent scene was all true, and the stars actually had to perform the scene, which easily could’ve gone sideways.

She referenced the infamous ‘cake scene’ in the biographical film where Turner’s husband, played by Laurence Fishburne, had to shove her ( Angela Bassett ’s) face in a cake, as well as slap her friend Jackie as well. She recalled filming for the scene, and shared that “They wanted to put the double in for the slap, and then I'd pop up. So I told the director, I told Brian Gibson, 'You know what? This is not going to be right because I need to be in the moment, and when I get up, then I could tell him off, and I need to have that energy, that adrenaline.’”

She further recalled that she was told that a choreographer was going to guide her on when to turn her head with the actor’s hand movement to make it seem like she was actually slapped. “On one take, we missed. We didn't have the eye connection and he slapped the living s--- out of me. My face was pounding,” Calloway recalled, and added that this was the scene that was added to the film because she did not stop acting after the mishap.

She concluded that while it was painful, she was well aware that she had to keep the scene going. “Of course, when they cut, everybody ran to me with ice packs and everything to make sure I was okay. But I mean he slapped the poop out of me,” she concluded while laughing.
