In a major move set to redefine India’s ride-hailing economy, the central government is preparing to launch Bharat Taxia nationwide mobility app offering drivers a cooperative-owned alternative to platforms like Uber, Ola, and Rapido. The update was confirmed by Cooperation Minister Amit Shah in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
A Cooperative Platform That Belongs Entirely to Drivers
Unlike private aggregators that charge high commissions and control pricing, Bharat Taxi will be run by Sahkar Taxi Cooperative Ltda multi-state cooperative registered under the MSCS Act, 2002. The cooperative has zero government stake and is fully owned by its driver-members.
With over 51,000 registered drivers in New Delhi and Saurashtrait is already the world’s largest national driver-owned mobility cooperative at the beta stage.
Amit Shah stated that the app aims to “free commercial vehicle drivers from dependency on private companies,” giving them full control over earnings and governance.
Key benefits for drivers include:
- 100% fare retention
- Annual dividends and profit-sharing
- Representation on the cooperative’s board
- Transparent, community-driven decision-making
Soft Launch Begins in Delhi and Gujarat
The Bharat Taxi app entered beta trials on Google Play Store with soft launches in Delhi and Gujarat. An iOS version is expected soon. The platform aims to unify India’s fragmented mobility landscape by integrating:
- Two-wheelers
- Auto-rickshaws
- Taxis
- Four-wheelers
This multi-vehicle model allows the app to efficiently serve both first-mile and last-mile connectivity needs across India.
Features Designed for Transparency and Safety
The app incorporates a strong focus on user safety and cooperatively driven transparency. Key features include:
- Easy ride booking with a clean user interface
- Transparent, cooperative-based fare system
- Real-time vehicle tracking
- 24×7 multilingual customer support
