The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio to enhance the safety of passengers on national highways and make the travel experience more seamless. Under this partnership, a telecom based safety alert system will be launched across the entire National Highway network for more than 50 crore Jio customers.
Through Jio’s 4G–5G network, drivers will get advance information about accident prone areas, foggy areas, stray animal zones and emergency diversion on their mobile. Safety messages will reach passengers through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority calls. This fully automated system will work for Jio Mobile users on or near national highways and will not require any additional road-side hardware as it will operate through existing telecom towers.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said that this initiative is an important step towards providing timely and accurate information to the passengers, so that they can be alert in advance and adopt safe driving. He expressed confidence that this initiative will set a new benchmark in technology-based road safety management.
Reliance Jio President Jyotindra Thakkar said that this initiative will be able to deliver security alerts on a large scale by harnessing the power of Jio’s extensive telecom network and will make travel on national highways more safe.
The safety alert system will be linked to ‘Rajmarg Yatra App’ and helpline 1033 in a phased manner. The pilot project will start in some areas and then it will be expanded across the country.
