There was a stir in Delhi’s busy Karol Bagh area on Thursday evening when 5 vicious thugs, wearing police uniform and plain dress, looted more than one kg of gold from a jewelery workshop. The estimated value of the loot is more than Rs 1 crore. The thugs were so clever that after the incident they also took the CCTV DVR with them.

How was the incident carried out?

A jeweler named Madan Mandal runs his small workshop on the fourth floor of Block-2 in a narrow street of Dev Nagar. Five people reached there around 4 pm on Thursday evening. One of them was wearing full uniform of Delhi Police, while the rest were in plain clothes. He described himself as an officer of the Income Tax and GST department. Madan and his six to seven employees got scared. The swindlers showed documents, opened drawers and got the shelves checked, which all seemed ‘official’.

Then the thugs picked up about 1 kg and 1 gram of gold kept for processing and put it in a bag. While leaving, he said that CCTV DVR will also go with him and it will be checked in the department. The employees did not dare to ask anything.

How was the secret revealed?

As soon as the thugs came out, Madan Mandal became suspicious. He called a real Income Tax officer he knew. During the call, it was revealed that there was no raid of any kind, due to which Madan was shocked. After this the jeweler informed the police, and the team of Prasad Nagar police station reached the spot. FIR was registered after the incident.

Police uniform made the game easier

Senior officers say that having one person in police uniform was a well-thought-out plan. Raids usually happen in busy areas like Karol Bagh, so no one got suspicious. According to officials, the thugs had also earlier conducted recce of the area.

Now the police have intensified their investigation. CCTV footage of nearby streets and shops is being scrutinized and efforts are being made to trace the route of the thugs. Apart from this, the police are also finding out whether any other such cases have happened in the last few months.
