According to Yahoo! SingaporeLeung spoke about his life during his appearance at the Singapore International Film Festival on Nov. 30. He dismissed rumors that he intended to “settle long-term in Japan,” clarifying that his trips are purely for leisure.
Explaining his frequent travels, the actor said he enjoys solitude, and the language barrier allows him to “not have to talk to anyone” while there, a situation that suits his introverted personality.
“If you don’t know the language, you can only say a sentence or two at most, and that’s it,” he said.
Leung added that he has not learned Japanese, only a few basic phrases for daily needs. For him, the language barrier simplifies life, letting him avoid social obligations and fully enjoy his private time.
These remarks echo his earlier comments to The Straits Times in 2023: “I feel I’m more zen. Also, I’m starting to yearn for a simpler life. Simplicity is happiness.”
At 63, Leung began his acting career in 1982 and has since become one of Asia’s most acclaimed and internationally recognized actors. He is particularly celebrated for his collaborations with Wong Kar-wai, appearing in seven of the director’s films, including “In the Mood for Love,” which earned him the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
