Chelsea are poised to push the button on a move for the sought after Rennes defender, Jeremy Jacquet, and could also sign an attacking midfielder this month with Cole Palmer still being plagued by a groin issue.

The Blues are under new management after Liam Rosenior replaced Enzo Maresca at the helm following the Italian's exit and there is scope for the former Strasbourg chief to reshape the squad he inherited slightly with the transfer window open until February 2.

Chelsea have made some big moves in the transfer market in recent years under their current ownership - and a new report now claims they could be about to splash some serious cash again in the winter window.

The Sun outline that Chelsea are ready to press ahead with a move for the highly-rated Jacquet, 20, although Rennes are understood to be reluctant to cash in on their star defender this month.

Jacquet has other high-profile suitors, including both Arsenal and Bayern Munich, after impressing in Ligue 1.

Chelsea would like to add a defender to their squad in January with their first-choice centre half, Levi Colwill, not playing at all this season due to an ACL injury. They did attempt to sign Dean Huijsen, only for the Bournemouth man to join Real Madrid.

With a move for Jacquet expected imminently, the club are also ready to look at adding an attacking midfielder. Palmer, the Blues' talisman, has struggled for fitness this term with a groin issue restricting him to just 12 appearances.

Chelsea have also lost the services of Facundo Buonanotte, whose season-long loan was cut short by Brighton this week in order for the Argentina international to link up with Leeds United.

Speaking on Thursday, Rosenior indicated the potential was there for Chelsea to do business this month, saying: “I think if we do [make signings in January] it needs to be the right player. We need to be patient. I want to assess this group. It's really, really important to me.

“We still have time. We have conversations every day, myself and the board, about potential transfers, both out and in. But at the same time, I need to focus on the players in the building.

“If I feel it's the right time or the right player, then we'll make that decision.”
