A first-year undergraduate college student died after consuming 'Venkaram' (borax) for weight loss as per a video posted on social media.

According to police, 19-year-old Kalaiyarasi was the daughter of daily wage laborer Vel Murugan (51) and Vijayalakshmi and was studying in a premier private women's college in Narimedu. She lived in Kamaraj Cross Street, Meenambalapuram area of ​​Sellur.

Kalaiyarasi often looked for solutions related to weight loss.

Police said that due to being overweight, Kalaiyarsi was often looking for ways to lose weight. Last week, he watched a YouTube video titled 'Venkaram for weight loss and slim body' and purchased the substance from a medicine shop located near Thermautty area of ​​Keezhamasi Street on January 16. Kalaiyarasi consumed it in the manner described in the video on January 17, after which he started vomiting and having diarrhea.

Health deteriorated after taking medicine

His mother took him to a private hospital in Munisalai, where after treatment he was sent home. However, the symptoms resurfaced the same evening and upon returning home after treatment at another nearby hospital, he complained of severe abdominal pain and blood in the stool.

According to the police, the condition of vomiting and diarrhea became serious around 11 pm, after which he was taken to Government Rajaji Hospital with the help of neighbours, but on reaching there the doctors declared him dead. The post-mortem of the dead body has been done and handed over to the relatives. Sellur police have registered the case and started investigation.
