WhatsApp is constantly introducing new updates to improve the user experience. In line with this, the company is testing a great new feature that will completely change the group chat experience. According to reports, WhatsApp may soon introduce a feature called 'Recent History Sharing'. This feature will allow existing group members to share past chat history with new members joining the group.
What is this 'Group Chat History' feature?
Currently, when you join a WhatsApp group, you only see messages sent after you joined. It's difficult to find old conversations or context. Other platforms like Telegram already can view old chats, but WhatsApp lacks this feature.
According to WABetaInfo's report:
This feature will help new members understand the purpose of the group and the context of past conversations. Up to 100 messages sent in the last 14 days can be shared. These shared old messages will be highlighted in a different color to clearly distinguish between new and old messages.
How will this feature work?
This feature will not be completely automatic but will be under the user's control. The feature will be 'off by default'. This means WhatsApp will not automatically send old chats. When an existing member adds a new person using the 'Add Member' option, the 'Share Recent Messages' option will appear at the bottom of the screen. When the old chat is shared, a system message will appear in the group with the name of the user who shared the chat with the new member.
Who will get this update and when?
Currently, this feature is available for iOS (iPhone) users through the TestFlight beta program. It was previously teased for Android as well, but it seems the company is preparing to roll it out more widely through iOS. Since it is still in the testing phase and the rollout is gradual, there is no definite release date for general users yet.
