A fraud attempt involving impersonation of Lokayukta officials has been reported at the city police station.
According to the complaint, Kapil Dev S. Godemane, First Division Revenue Inspector of the Udupi City Municipality, received a WhatsApp call on January 19 from an unidentified person claiming to be Cheluvaraj, a Lokayukta Inspector from Mangaluru division.
The caller alleged that a complaint had been received against the official and warned of legal action and departmental inquiry if the issue was not “settled”. Another person later called, claiming to be a senior officer, and repeated the threat.
Suspecting foul play, the complainant verified the matter at the Udupi Lokayukta office, which confirmed that no such officials worked there and that the calls were fraudulent.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the impersonation attempt.
