Many people think of places like Norway or Switzerland when talking about the world's best train journeys. Routes such as the Flåm Railway or the Glacier Express are often praised for their views. But one of the most highly rated rail trips on the planet is actually in the UK.
In 2009, readers of Wanderlust magazine voted it the most scenic railway journey in the world. It beat famous routes including the Trans-Siberian Railway and the line to Machu Picchu. And it has continued to receive the same level of praise ever since.
The train ride in question is the West Highland Line in Scotland. It runs for around 164 miles from Glasgow Queen Street to Mallaig and is regularly described as one of the country's best travel experiences.
It is also considered one of the main reasons why many visitors choose to travel around Scotland by rail.
Travel experts at Mickledore say the route stands out because of what passengers see along the way.
They describe it as "a living canvas of Scotland" where "mountains, moors, lochs, wildlife, and history unfold before you".
The line leaves Glasgow and heads north through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
It then moves across Rannoch Moor, which is known for how remote it is. Later, there are views of Ben Nevis.
Another famous part of the journey is the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a structure recognised around the world because of the Harry Potter films.
The route also includes Corrour Station. It is the highest and most remote mainline station in the UK and has no public road access.
Passengers can only get there by train or by walking in from the surrounding hills.
Travelling the full length of the line takes around five hours. Services run several times a day depending on the time of year. The line includes 21 tunnels and more than 100 bridges.
Experts say the best time to travel is between late spring and autumn, although winter can still offer very good views.
They also say passengers should sit on the left side when heading north to see more of the landscape. Seats can sell out quickly in peak season, so booking ahead is advised.
For anyone who prefers a traditional style of travel, the Jacobite Steam Train operates along part of the route in the summer.
It also crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is one of the main reasons people choose to book it.
Passengers on TripAdvisor have been full of praise for the journey. One wrote: "This line thoroughly deserves its reputation as one of the great railway journeys of the world.
"We deliberately chose to go out of the tourist season to avoid the crowds. Although there was no snow, the rain-filled skies held their own beauty."
Another said: "Exploring Scotland by train is something I highly recommend. Scotland is a country of indescribable beauty and you can take in a lot there simply by looking out a train window."
A third traveller added: "I have done this scenic train journey twice and the scenery is outstanding and breathtaking. I can see why it's said to be the most beautiful train journey in the world."
