Schools across the UK could close on Tuesday as Storm Chadra sweeps across the country. In Northern Ireland, they have confirmed they will be closed. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for counties Antrim, Derry, and Down, with strong winds expeected between 5am and 9pm. An amber warning for rain is also in place in south Devon, much of Dorset, southern Somerset, and southeast Cornwall.

Between 30-50mm of rain could fall widely, with up to 60-80mm over higher ground of south Dartmoor. A separate yellow alert for rain and wind covers the entirety of Northern Ireland from midnight tonight until 11.59pm on Tuesday. The Education Authority said the "situation has been discussed with the department and minister". There are currently no immediate plans to announce widespread school closures.

Headteachers have been told to observe and evaluate the weather warnings and conditions in their areas, and to make regional decisions where necessary.

School transport services will continue to run, but may be disrupted by strong winds and flooding. Following police guidance, backup plans are being put in place to bypass coastal routes wherever feasible.

Parents should be prepared for possible disruption to school transport on Tuesday, as they may need to arrange alternative travel for their children in certain circumstances.

The anticipated strong winds are expected to result in structural damage, including dislodging roof tiles and generating hazardous airborne debris.

Members of the public are advised to exercise extreme caution, as these weather conditions pose a real threat to life and property.
