Synopsis

A shocking murder unfolded on Ananthnagar Road. Prashanth M, 33, was killed by his friend Roshan Hegde, 36. Hegde deliberately crashed his SUV twice, causing fatal injuries to Prashanth who was clinging to the car. The incident was initially mistaken for an accident. Dashcam footage revealed the brutal act. The motive stemmed from a drunken argument following a cricket match.

What was initially reported by a passer-by as a road accident turned out to be a chilling case of murder on Ananthnagar Road in Electronics City late Sunday evening. The victim, Prashanth M (33), and the accused, Roshan Hegde (36), were friends, police said.

Roshan, a software engineer working with a firm in Domlur, allegedly killed Prashanth by deliberately crashing his SUV twice while the latter was clinging to the front-left side of the vehicle. Police said Roshan continued driving for nearly 600 metres with Prashanth hanging on before intentionally ramming the car to ensure his death.

The murder came to light after M Narayana, DCP (Electronics City), noticed a dashcam installed in the vehicle and ordered the footage to be examined.

Prashanth was a resident of Veerasandra in Electronics City, while Roshan lives in Vignananagar and is a native of Udupi district. Based on a complaint filed by Prashanth’s mother, Anu, the police have registered a murder case against Roshan.

A passerby mistook the incident for a road accident and alerted the police, following which Roshan was rushed to a hospital. The case was initially treated as an accident until M Narayana, DCP (Electronics City), noticed a dashcam installed in the vehicle and ordered the footage to be examined.

The dashcam footage revealed that Roshan had suddenly accelerated and deliberately rammed the SUV into a compound wall, before reversing and crashing it again into a tree. In the twin impacts, Prashanth—who was clinging to the vehicle from the outside—suffered fatal injuries and died on the spot.

"After confirming it was an intentional act, we went to the hospital where Roshan was undergoing treatment. Doctors informed us that his tongue was almost severed and that he underwent a minor surgery. He was discharged on Monday and was taken into custody for interrogation," Narayana told TOI.

Police said a group of men had gathered to play cricket in Kammasandra on Sunday evening and later consumed alcohol. In a drunken stupor, Prashanth allegedly approached Roshan, seeking a lighter and abused him, triggering an argument. "In a fit of rage, Roshan assaulted Prashanth and both attacked each other with beer bottles. As the situation escalated, Roshan got into his Tata Safari and tried to leave," the police officer said.

As Roshan drove away, Prashanth jumped onto the SUV’s left footboard and clung to the front-left window. Dashcam footage showed Roshan initially driving at around 35 kmph before accelerating on a deserted stretch, ramming the vehicle into a compound wall, reversing, and crashing it into a tree.

Police said the dashcam also captured the two men abusing and threatening each other, adding that Sunday’s altercation stemmed from a feud during a cricket match played on Saturday.
