Payton Pritchard won Sixth Man of the Year last season, but the Boston Celtics guard has another informal title: the NBA’s buzzer-beater king.
On Monday, Pritchard sank buzzer-beaters at the end of the first two quarters of the Celtics’ 102-94 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, finishing with 23 points, five three-pointers and countless dagger shots.
Payton Pritchard is better with the clock running down
Pritchard first started getting national attention for his buzzer-beating superpowers during the Celtics’ run to the 2024 title. He made a deep three to end the third quarter in the first game of Boston’s second-round win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, but became a legend in the NBA Finals.
During Game 2, Pritchard banked in a 34-footer to close the third quarter, giving the Celtics a nine-point lead going into the final quarter of a 105-98 win. He one-upped himself in the decisive Game 5, sinking a 49-foot shot to close the third quarter and effectively end the Finals.
