The whole of Bengal is intoxicated with the worship of Bagdevi at nightfall. That is the only day off from studying. It’s like a sudden freedom for the students. A day of walking around in yellow saris and Punjabi. Saraswati Puja is performed in almost every Bengali home. Shital Shashti is the day after Saraswati Puja. The girls of the house observe the vow. On that day, cooking is closed at home. They eat the boiled whole cooked the night before. But why Shital Shashti is celebrated on the next day of Saraswati Puja for ages? Why many people eat whole boiled?
On the morning of Saraswati Puja, householders go out with bags in their hands. Even though the price is high, they select from the market and buy spinach, whole mung bean, whole eggplant, whole bean, whole karaishuti, topa kul, sajon flower as whole vegetables.
When the puja is over, the entire cooking begins in the afternoon in a clean pot. Any vegetable is put in the pot without cutting, so it is known as whole boiled. When it is cooked, the whole cooking is over. Some add spices to the whole dish. Others cook whole without spices. Shashti Puja is done on Shashti Tithi the morning after Saraswati Puja. Then the puja of house sheel, nora is done with flowers, prasad. During the Puja, drops of curd are put on the sheel-nora. At the end of the puja, that curd is sprinkled on the food cooked the previous day. On this day, the fire is not lit in the house from morning. Much like Arandhan, with this Parvan, a different atmosphere is created the day after Saraswati Puja.

So the custom of eating boiled whole on the day after Saraswati Puja is still prevalent today. However, the pressure of work in many homes has now interrupted this practice. But it can be said by swearing, once you have eaten the whole stew prepared by the hands of the mothers and grandmothers of the house, you will not forget that taste even in your life.
