Stock market closed: Market buzzing for the second consecutive day due to India-EU trade deal, Sensex rose by 487 points, Nifty closed with a gain of 167 points.

Mumbai. Domestic stock markets closed higher for the second consecutive day on Wednesday amid increased enthusiasm from the historic free trade agreement between India and the European Union (EU). BSE Sensex rose 487 points while NSE Nifty rose 167 points. BSE’s 30-share benchmark index Sensex jumped 487.20 points, or 0.60 percent, to close at 82,344.68.

At one time during trading, it had reached 82,503.97 points with a rise of 646.49 points. Whereas NSE’s standard index Nifty increased by 167.35 points or 0.66 percent and closed at 25,342.75 points. Among the companies included in the Sensex group, shares of Bharat Electronics jumped nearly nine percent after the December quarter results.

Apart from this, shares of Eternal, Bajaj Finance, Power Grid, Trent, Mahindra & Mahindra and UltraTech Cement also rose. On the other hand, shares of Asian Paints fell by more than four percent. Apart from this, shares of Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, Infosys and Bharti Airtel also remained in loss. Finalization of the FTA between India and the EU will create a market of about two billion people and cover about a quarter of global GDP.

This agreement will reduce duty on 99 percent of Indian exports to the EU, while 97 percent of imports from the EU will reduce duty in India. According to stock market data, on Tuesday, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 3,068.49 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) made net purchases of Rs 8,999.71 crore.

In other markets of Asia, South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei, China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed with gains. A declining trend was seen during trading in European markets. Most of the US markets closed with gains on Tuesday.

In the international oil market, Brent crude fell 0.62 percent to $ 67.25 per barrel. On Tuesday, Sensex rose 319.78 points to 81,857.48 and Nifty rose 126.75 points to close at 25,175.40.
