Nipah virus cases in India West Bengal: Two active cases of Nipah virus have been reported in West Bengal, India as of late December 2025. According to the Health Ministry, both the people infected are health workers and are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. A matter of concern for experts is that a case of Nipah has been reported in West Bengal after almost 20 years, although its cases have been seen in Kerala earlier also.
Alert in neighboring countries and strictness at airports As soon as cases were reported in India, countries like China, Pakistan, Nepal, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia immediately increased vigilance.
- Singapore: Temperature screening of passengers on flights coming from India has been started.
- Hong Kong and Malaysia: Stringent health checks and screening have been intensified at international entry points.
- Thailand: Separate parking has been set up for planes coming from affected areas and health declarations are being made from the passengers.
- Nepal: High alert has been declared on the borders with India and China.
All 196 people who came in contact are safe. It is a matter of relief that the Health Ministry had identified 196 people who came in contact with these two patients and examined them. The reports of all have come negative and no symptoms of the virus have been found.
What is Nipah virus and its symptoms?
Nipah virus spreads to humans mainly from fruit-eating bats and pigs. It can also spread to each other through close contact with an infected person. Its main symptoms include severe conditions like high fever and swelling in the brain. There is currently no complete vaccine available for this virus, although some vaccines are currently in the testing phase.
People who came in contact are safe
It is a matter of relief that the Health Ministry has identified a total of 196 people who came in contact with these two patients and thoroughly investigated them. According to the investigation report, no symptoms of Nipah virus have been found in any of these people and the reports of all have come negative.
