Harvey Elliott gets new transfer verdict with Liverpool star urged to make U-turn

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has been urged to reconsider his hesitation about spending the remainder of the campaign in Major League Soccer. Elliott has already featured for two Premier League sides this season - his parent club, plus loan side Aston Villa.

This means he can't play for a third club in one of the big European leagues this season but can still move to MLS or to another league that doesn't follow the summer-spring FIFA schedule. Elliott made a brief substitute appearance as Liverpool defeated Newcastle in August before securing a deadline day loan move to Villa Park.

The 22-year-old has found playing time hard to come by at Villa Park. where boss Unai Emery admitted a reluctance to make the transfer permanent has played a part. Villa will have to pay £35million if he reaches the threshold of 10 appearances, and the sense is they're unwilling to pay that much for a player struggling to break into Emery's first team.

Elliott's last outing came in October, and in early January The Times reported the England Under-21 international wasn't open to the prospect of heading across the Atlantic to join Charlotte FC. Yet former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy reckons the former Fulham man shouldn't rule out such a move as deadline day approaches.

"Yes, I do think Harvey Elliott should really consider his options, even the MLS," Murphy told BestBettingSites.co.uk. "Harvey Elliott is a super talent. He's got a great attitude and we'll definitely see him playing in the Premier League and succeeding.

"It obviously hasn't worked at Villa, and sometimes that happens. A manager doesn't see you the same way you see yourself, or doesn't see you in the roles you feel suit you.

"If he only sees him as a number 10 , which seems to be the case, then you're competing with Morgan Rogers, a resurgent [Emi] Buendía, and there are financial considerations when you're bringing him on as a substitute. It's not ideal, but these things happen and you put it down to experience."

Elliott found himself back amongst the substitutes for Villa's victory at Newcastle on Sunday, though he would not earn his first minutes on the pitch since a Europa League cameo against Feyenoord. His inclusion fuelled speculation that Villa and Liverpool may have reached an understanding over renegotiating terms, potentially removing the Midlands outfit's obligation to secure a permanent transfer, though there has been no confirmation of this.

Should he choose to pursue a switch to MLS, the midfielder would be following the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Javier Hernandez in making such a move. Zaha made a loan move to Charlotte in January 2025 following spells with Galatasaray and Lyon during the same campaign, whilst Hernandez's switch to LA Galaxy five years before that followed minutes in the first half of the 2019/20 season with both West Ham and Sevilla.

"The problem we have with Harvey is this year he is on loan and in case he is playing matches, we must buy him," Emery said in early January. "We decided two months ago we are not convinced to sign him, spending the money we need.

"This is the issue. But he is training every day, very good with us to help us in training and of course it is not good for him or good for us, but it is football and sometimes we must take decisions that are not good for us."
