Arijit Singh’s playback exit: Sona Mohapatra weighs in

Sona Mohapatra opened up about Arijit Singh’s surprising step back from playback singing.

On Wednesday, January 28, the composer took to her official Instagram handle and called Arijit’s decision to step away from playback singing “brave”, “generous”, and “disruptive in the best way.”

She shared a heartfelt post with the caption, “To @arijitsingh & #India with #Love, I’ve walked the path of putting music out of my own year after year, it’s a very fulfilling, incomparable road. Exhausting also but exhilarating for sure.”

In her message, the singer described the move as more than just a break from Bollywood music, framing it as a step toward “freedom, authorship and possibility.”

Meanwhile, she did not speculate on the acclaimed singer’s personal reasons, she emphasized the significance of the choice both for him and the industry.

Moreover, she added, “None of his predecessors even imagined this path: stepping aside to make space. For himself first, to explore, to create, to sing his own songs on his own terms.”

Furthermore, she addressed industry practices, noting the overuse of certain voices and the exploitative cycles that limit creative freedom, saying, “Producers overuse one voice and don’t pay demo singers…then record Arijit and everyone keep an exploitative cycle alive because it’s convenient.”

Professionally, she herself continues to focus on independent music, live performances, and advocating for artists’ rights and gender equality through her production house OmGrown Music, in collaboration with her husband, composer Ram Sampath.
