Marks and Spencer is often thought to be one of the most expensive British supermarkets, but I did not know how hefty the price tags could be until I tried shopping there myself. Throughout my adult life, I have been reluctant to even step into a Marks and Spencer as I try to be frugal when it comes to my weekly food shop.
However, I recently moved near an M&S supermarket, and curiosity got the better of me, so this week I decided to treat myself to some of its famous snack range. I have so far been really impressed by the high-quality fruit, crisps and fancy dips, but when I stumbled into the confectionery aisle, I could not believe how much they were charging for one chocolate bar.
The Big Daddy is a chunky chocolate bar absolutely loaded with caramel, peanut butter, roasted peanut pieces, and both milk and dark chocolate.
I first came across it when it blew up on TikTok and Instagram, where people started a trend of breaking it in half on camera to show off the ridiculously gooey caramel inside.
It quickly became a running joke that no Marks & Spencer in the UK could keep it in stock, and naturally, I had to see what all the hype was about for myself.
However, I could not believe my local Marks & Spencer was charging £7.50 for it, so I immediately took a photo to complain to a friend about how extortionate the price was.
My weekly food shop normally costs about £30, so dropping almost a third of that on a single chocolate bar nearly made my jaw hit the floor.
After a bit of internal debate, I bought the chocolate and made myself a big cup of tea when I got home to try it properly.
It is a really thick bar, and I struggled to bite into it at first, but once I got going I found it incredibly indulgent. The caramel was easily my favourite part as it was beautifully buttery, which paired perfectly with the dark chocolate and crunchy nuts.
That said, the milk chocolate tipped it into being a little too sweet for me, and after just three bites I found myself reaching for a second cup of tea to balance it out.
Overall, I would describe it as a very posh Snickers bar. It was a fun experience to try, but it is too big, too rich, and simply too expensive to be a regular treat.
I do not think it is worth the whopping £7.50 price tag, but I did like it and could absolutely see it making a lovely gift for a birthday or special occasion, especially for someone with a serious sweet tooth.
