Election Commission Warns Muhammad Yunus: The Election Commission in Bangladesh has now started taking steps against the Yunus government. The reason for this is the referendum to be held along with the elections on 12 February. The Commission has warned government officials that strict action will be taken against them if they promote the referendum. This instruction has given a big blow to the government.
In fact, the government of Bangladesh had already officially planned to campaign in favor of the referendum. The government said that it would make the general public aware of its importance, so that some permanent changes could be made in the Constitution of Bangladesh.
Why did Yunus want a referendum?
The interim government has decided to hold a referendum for permanent changes to the Constitution along with the elections. Under this, if more than 50 percent of the public votes in favor of this referendum, then the rule of July Charter will come into force in Bangladesh. After removing Sheikh Hasina, the Yunus government is trying to implement democratic reforms.
The July Charter proposes changes in the powers of the Prime Minister, President, Election Commission and Supreme Court. According to this, a person cannot become Prime Minister more than twice and the party president cannot hold the post of Prime Minister. A total of 37 changes are proposed. The government says that it cannot be changed in Parliament after the referendum, that is why it wants to campaign.
What is the whole controversy?
The interim government of Mohammad Yunus, Jamaat-e-Islami and Nahid Islam’s party is in favor of the referendum, while Tariq Rahman’s BNP and Jatiya Party are opposing it. If the government campaigns in its favor then it may directly cause loss to BNP.
This step could affect the elections, so the Election Commission banned it. Local media “Samakal” reported in one of its reports that, after the decision of the Commission, the government officials are shocked and there have also been reports of dissatisfaction among the top leadership of the government.
