The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established a new requirement mandating Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to complete a minimum of two years in central deputation at the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) or Deputy Inspector General (DIG) before they can be considered for appointments as Inspector General (IG) or equivalent positions. This regulation will apply to IPS officers from the 2011 batch and those who joined later.
According to an official notification released on January 28, IPS officers must have this central experience to be eligible for IG or similar roles. The directive has been communicated to the Chief Secretaries of all state governments, instructing them to inform all IPS officers in their respective cadres about the updated guidelines.
Copies of this notification have also been distributed to Directors General of Police (DGPs) in various states, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), and other relevant senior officials within the Ministry of Home Affairs. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been requested to upload this notification in the 'What's New' section of the official IPS website. Officials indicated that this initiative aims to equip IPS officers with adequate central-level experience before they assume senior leadership roles within the central government.
