Mumbai: The BSE Sensex erased its early losses and jumped 221.69 points to close at 82,566.37 on Thursday. Intraday, it dropped 636.74 points to 81,707.94. The NSE Nifty appreciated 76.15 points to settle at 25,418.90. The 50-share index declined 182.95 points to a low of 25,159.80 during the day. The stock markets jumped as buying was reported in blue-chip Larsen & Toubro and the Economic Survey 2026 projected the GDP growth of 6.8-7.2 per cent for 2026-27.
The Economic Survey projected the GDP growth in the range of 6.8-7.2 per cent for 2026-27 and mentioned that the government is well on track to meet the fiscal deficit target of 4.4 per cent of GDP estimated for the current financial year.
In a sigh of relief, Foreign institutional investors turned buyers as they pumped in Rs 480.26 crore to buy stocks in the domestic market. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 3,360.59 crore.
Stock Market Performance & Key Stock Movers
Gainers from the BSE barometer: Tata Steel gained 4.41 per cent, Larsen & Toubro jumped 3.66 per cent. Other gainers included, NTPC, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Eternal.
From the 30-Sensex firms, laggards included, InterGlobe Aviation, Maruti, Bharat Electronics and Asian Paints.
“With the Union Budget due on Sunday, markets are bracing for volatility but downside appears limited; all eyes are on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for pro-growth cues,” Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, told PTI.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index, South Korea’s Kospi, Shanghai’s SSE Composite index and Japan’s Nikkei 225 ended in the positive territory. The US markets closed flat on Wednesday. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, gained 1.08 per cent to USD 69.14 per barrel.
On 28 January, the 30-share Sensex surged 487.20 points to finish at 82,344.68. The 50-share Nifty gained 167.35 points to settle at 25,342.75.
