Blow for little UK city as beloved cafe closing - 'can't afford to stay open'

A popular cafe has been forced to shut down due to rising costs, in another blow for the high street. Roots community hub, cafe and refill shop in Gloucester, will shut in February after experiencing declining income and struggling with increasing prices. According to reports, it "can no longer afford to stay open." The cafe has become a well-known spot in Kingsholm.

Despite years of trading, this is not the first time it has faced difficulties. In 2024, the cafe closed and reopened. Many locals have expressed their sadness about the closure on social media. Roots' story is not uncommon, with many UK businesses struggling.

On Instagram, Roots said the imminent closure is due to "a significant drop in income, coupled with a major increase in bills putting us in debt".

It adds: "The building is also looking likely to be put up for sale by our landlords, Branch 2, and Roots, simply not having the funds to purchase it.

"These issues could be worked around; we could move, we can sort out our income streams and get some help, but the major problem that stops us is that our remaining directors need to move on from Roots due to life events.

"We are open to offers to take over, or purchase out the assets of the business to save Roots."

The independent Roots has called on anyone in a position to take over the business to get in touch before Wednesday, February 11, 2026, when it will start selling assets.

The current operators estimate that a substantial buyout would be required, with at least £8,000 needed to clear its existing debts.

Across UK high streets, huge numbers of cafes, pubs and independent stores have been forced to shut alongside some larger high street chains.

Accessory giant Claire's went into administration at the very end of 2025, and its stores remain under threat of closure in 2026. Poundland closed more than 100 UK stores last year, with more scheduled over the next few weeks.

River Island plans to close 32 stores this year as part of a major restructuring aimed at cutting costs, while fashion brand Quiz is "on the brink" of administration, with 44 stores at risk.
