Bus Accident- A Himachal Roadways passenger bus met with a tragic accident in the Kalsi area of Dehradun district, leaving four people dead and at least seven others critically injured. The vehicle, which was carrying over 30 passengers, reportedly lost control and slipped off a narrow hill road before plunging into a deep gorge.

Passengers Among the Deceased Identified
Officials confirmed that the victims included Yasmin Begum, aged 46, and Richa, 30, both residents of Vizmal village. Another victim, Dhan Bahadur, hailed from Kyarla Nerwa. The bus driver, Dinesh Kumar, 54, a native of Chopal in Shimla district, also died after sustaining severe injuries during the crash. Authorities said he succumbed at the spot before help could arrive.
Accident Occurred on Difficult Mountain Stretch
According to initial findings shared by the State Disaster Response Force, the accident took place near Kuanu on Meenak Road, a route known for its sharp turns and steep slopes. Local officials said the area has a history of traffic risks due to limited road width and challenging terrain, particularly during early morning travel hours.
SDRF Teams Deployed for Immediate Rescue
Rescue efforts were launched shortly after the incident was reported. SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi directed multiple units to proceed to the site without delay. Specialized teams from Dakpathar, Chakrata, Mori, and Tiuni were mobilized to support rescue and evacuation operations.
An SDRF official involved in the operation stated that early assessments from the scene confirmed four fatalities and several passengers suffering from life-threatening injuries. The injured were stabilized at the site before being shifted to nearby medical facilities.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Terrain
The operation has proven demanding due to the steep depth of the ravine and the extensive damage to the bus. Portions of the vehicle were crushed, making access to trapped passengers difficult. Rescue personnel have been using ropes, cutting tools, and other specialized equipment to safely reach those inside the wreckage.
Officials said the teams are proceeding cautiously to avoid further harm to survivors, given the unstable terrain and loose soil along the gorge.
Focus on Medical Aid and Evacuation
Authorities emphasized that providing immediate medical assistance remains the top priority. Medical teams across Dehradun district were placed on high alert, and hospitals were instructed to prepare emergency facilities for the injured.
“The terrain is extremely challenging, but our teams are trained for high-risk rescue missions in mountainous areas,” the SDRF commandant said, adding that coordination between rescue units and health services has been strengthened to ensure timely treatment.
Cause of Accident Under Investigation
While the precise cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, officials believe the bus may have lost control while navigating a sharp curve. Mechanical failure, road conditions, and driver visibility are among the factors being examined as part of the investigation.
Authorities also indicated that the death toll could rise as rescue teams continue searching deeper sections of the ravine to ensure no passenger remains unaccounted for.
Ongoing Operation and Official Response
The rescue operation was still underway at the time of reporting. District officials said a detailed report would be prepared after the completion of rescue and recovery work. Further updates are expected once investigators conclude their preliminary assessment.
The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety challenges in hill regions, particularly for public transport vehicles operating on narrow and winding routes.
