Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has directed the state government to submit details by February 5 on the measures taken to identify foreigners residing in the state.
The direction was issued on Tuesday during the hearing of a drug-related case involving Nigerian nationals.
The petition was filed by Meka James and Uderick Udelis, Nigerian citizens currently residing at Kogilu Layout, Bengaluru. They claimed that they were not produced before a court within the required time after being arrested in connection with the drug case.
During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Shanti Bhushan, appearing for the Centre, told the court that the accused were found with 400 grams of MDMA and cocaine.
He also submitted that the Nigerian nationals had not registered with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of arriving in India. It was further alleged that they were staying in the country without valid visas and had entered India using someone else’s passport.
The Centre described the issue as a threat to national security.
Expressing displeasure over the state government’s response, Justice M Nagaprasanna directed the Karnataka government to provide information on the steps taken to trace illegal foreigners and adjourned the matter to February 5.
