  • According to studies, genes influence about 55% of human lifespan, excluding deaths due to external causes.
  • Data from twin siblings in Denmark and Sweden found greater similarity in life expectancy for identical twins.
  • According to experts, genes determine the life expectancy limit, while diet, environment and habits determine whether we reach that limit or not.

It is often said that to live long, be healthy Lifestyle should be accepted. A balanced diet, daily exercise keeps us healthy but can it really increase our lifespan? Health experts also believe that good eating habits and proper habits can prolong a person’s life. However, a new research has recently come out that has made a shocking revelation. In this, scientists claimed that people’s lives are determined not only by diet or exercise, but by their genes. From this it is understood that how many years you are going to live. No matter how good your lifestyle is, the biggest factor in how you age is your genes.

According to one study, it is claimed that, excluding deaths due to road accidents, infections and other external causes, about 55 percent of human lifespan is genetic. Simply put, more than half of the variation in people’s lifespan is due to genes. This figure is much higher than previous estimates, which considered genetics to be only 10 to 25 percent. The study is based on a large Scandinavian twin cohort from Denmark and Sweden, covering more than 100 years of data.

Scientists studied twins with the same genes (identical) and twins with different genes (non-identical). In their study, they also included data from siblings over 100 years of age. Most participants were born between 1870 and 1935, when deaths from infectious diseases and accidents were common. It found that if death from external causes was removed, the age of identical twins was much more similar. This simply means that previously genetics seemed less influential because external factors (disease, violence) obscured the true picture. Now that modern treatments and better lifestyles have reduced such deaths, the effect of genes is becoming more apparent.

Indian experts believe that these study results are very important for public health. Chairman of Fortis C-DOC Dr. According to Anoop Mishra, genes play an important role in biological aging, but conditions in India may reduce this advantage. They say poor nutrition, increased air pollution, diabetes and obesity can cancel out genetic advantages and accelerate the aging process.

Experts believe that longevity is the result of a balance between genes and environment. Genes set an upper limit to a person’s lifespan, while lifestyle and epigenetics determine how close a person can get to that limit. The scientists also clarified that the study does not suggest that a person’s lifespan is fixed at birth. Rather, genes determine life expectancy and lifestyle determines whether we can reach it.
