Ghaziabad tragedy
Recently, a very sad incident has come to light from Ghaziabad, in which three minor sisters committed suicide due to their addiction to online gaming. This incident has once again raised the question of how much negative impact online gaming is having on the mental health of children. Earlier such games were considered only a means of entertainment, but now they have become a serious problem for children. To understand this topic in depth, we spoke to Monica Sharma, a senior psychologist from New Delhi.
expert view
According to psychologists, excessive gaming can affect the mental health of children. This can cause changes in their behaviour, sleep problems and stress. Furthermore, children become distant from reality, causing them to lose interest in studies, friends and family. Not only this, it has such a deep impact on the mental health of children that they are unable to tolerate defeat or failure.
Causes of gaming addiction in children
The use of mobile phones has increased significantly since the Covid-19 pandemic. Especially children have entered the digital world rapidly. Online games have many elements that attract children. Due to their young age and immature understanding, they easily fall into this trap.
signs of gaming addiction
Behavior: Excessive anger or aggression when stopped from playing games.
Health: Lack of sleep, dark circles under the eyes, weight gain and change in eating habits.
Studies: Declining school results and tendency not to do homework.
Social isolation: Staying away from friends and staying locked in your room.
Emotional problems: frequent crying, feeling worthless, or suicidal thoughts.
Tips for parents
According to the expert, strictness is not the right solution to get children out of this addiction. Due to this, children may become rebellious or go on the wrong path. So, instead of stopping them, it is better to explain lovingly and gradually set deadlines. Encourage children to participate in outdoor sports and exercise. If you feel that your child is going into depression or there are changes in his behavior, consult a psychologist immediately.
