Line of Duty is set to return for its seventh series in the Spring of 2026 but there is one show fans are convinced overshadows the BBC series. The British crime drama first aired in 1991 and is still being praised three decades after its release.

The ITV show features award-winning actress Helen Mirren, as DI Jane Tennison, a skilled top-class detective, who battles to prove herself in a male-dominated world. Over the course of the series, female police detective investigates a series of serial murders while dealing with sexist hostility from her male comrades.

The synopsis reads: "After a colleague suffers a near-fatal heart attack, Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison takes over an investigation into the murder of Delia Mornay, a young prostitute.

The case is challenging enough in its own right, since Jane quickly determines that there is very little tangible evidence against the main suspect, an ex-convict. Worse, however, she suspects there is a cover-up going on in her department, where her male team of investigators isn't making a secret of their displeasure to be working for a woman."

They added: "After a second body is discovered, what started as a single murder inquiry turns into an investigation stretching back over 10 years, forcing Jane to devote every waking hour to the case and taking a toll on her home life with her recently divorced live-in lover, Peter Rawlins."

Viewers have continued to praise the show which received a perfect score and ran for seven seasons.

One reviewer wrote: "One of the best TV police dramas ever!"

Another commented: "Any film or show that has Helen Mirren, is always excellent to watch... a great cast makes the show worth while, it's mysterious and bad ass. A must watch for sure."

A third wrote: "It burns slow, but it's unapologetically real about policing and crime."

A fourth remarked: "May be better than Line of Duty," while a fourth added, "Gives Line of Duty a run for its money."

The crime series concluded in 2006.

Prime Suspect is available to stream on ITVX.
