Ghooskhor Pandat Not About Any Caste, All Promos Withdrawn, Says Neeraj Pandey After Backlash

Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey on Friday clarified that the upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat is a work of fiction and does not target or represent any caste or community, a day after the film drew criticism over its title.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Pandey acknowledged that the title had hurt a section of viewers and announced that all promotional materials for the film would be taken down temporarily.
The film’s announcement earlier this week triggered backlash on social media, with several users calling the title insensitive and offensive. On Thursday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting following a complaint alleging that the title of the upcoming web-based release promotes negative stereotypes and vilifies a recognised social group.
Addressing the controversy, Pandey said the film, which he has co-written and produced, is a fictional cop drama. He explained that the term “Pandat” is used purely as a colloquial name for a fictional character and is not intended to reference any real community.
“The story focuses on an individual’s actions and choices and does not comment on or represent any caste, religion, or community. As a filmmaker, I approach my work with a deep sense of responsibility—to tell stories that are thoughtful and respectful,” Pandey said.

Starring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role, the crime thriller follows Ajay Dikshit, also known as Pandat, a corrupt police officer whose plans for a profitable and eventful night unravel after he gets caught in the middle of a global conspiracy unfolding in Delhi.
The film was announced by Netflix during an event on Tuesday. It is directed by Ritesh Shah, who has also co-written the story with Pandey, and is produced under Pandey’s banner, Friday Filmworks.
Known for critically acclaimed films such as A Wednesday, Special 26, and Baby, Pandey said Ghooskhor Pandat was created with sincere intent and solely to entertain audiences.
“We understand that the title has caused hurt to some viewers, and we genuinely acknowledge those feelings. In light of these concerns, we have decided to take down all promotional materials for the time being, as we believe the film should be experienced in its entirety and understood in the context of the story we intended to tell, rather than judged on partial glimpses,” he added.
