New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Friday dismissed widespread social media claims about a sudden surge in girls going “missing” in the national capital, saying the narrative was being spread through paid promotions designed to create panic rather than reporting factual trends.
In an official statement and posts on its social media platform, the force said that after tracking several leads, investigators concluded that viral videos and posts amplifying a supposed spike in missing girls were intentionally promoted for monetary gain. Authorities warned that creating public alarm for profit will not be tolerated and that legal action will be taken against those responsible.
The panic began after various posts and clips suggested that an unusually high number of young women were disappearing in Delhi, especially citing figures from the first half of January 2026. These posts went viral across platforms and were widely shared without verification.
Police also pointed out that some missing reports include short-term absences — such as temporary loss of contact — and that many individuals are quickly traced and reunited with families but still appear in official statistics.
