If you use UPI for online payments and want your entire family to make payments using a single UPI ID, this feature is now available. To make digital payments even easier, NPCI offers a feature called UPI Circle, which allows multiple family members to make payments from a single UPI account. With this feature, each member doesn't need to have a separate bank account. The main account holder can grant payment permissions to trusted family members. This feature is especially useful for children, the elderly, and dependent family members. Here's how to use it.
What is UPI Circle?
UPI Circle is a feature that allows a UPI ID linked to a single bank account to be shared with multiple trusted users. There is a primary user whose account is used for payments, and other secondary users who make the payments. This means that secondary users don't need to link their own bank accounts. They can make transactions based on the primary user's permission. This makes using digital payments easier at the family level. This feature works even with different phones.
Who can be a Primary and Secondary User?
The primary user is the person who has a bank account linked to a UPI app like BHIM, Google Pay, or PhonePe. They can add their family or friends as secondary users. A primary user can add a maximum of 5 people. The secondary user can be a family member, an elderly person, a student, or a friend. An invitation is sent via UPI ID or QR code to add them. The entire process is completed within the app.
Complete System for Setup and Payment Control
When setting up UPI Circle, the primary user has the option to decide how the secondary user will make payments. In full delegation mode, payments can be made without requiring permission every time by setting limits. Monthly and per-transaction limits can be set. In partial delegation mode, approval is required before every payment. To confirm the setup, the primary user needs to enter their UPI PIN. After adding a new member, a limited amount is allowed for the first 24 hours.
Security, Limits, and User Benefits
For security, the secondary user needs to authenticate payments using biometrics or an app passcode. The primary user receives information about every transaction, ensuring complete monitoring. The maximum limit per transaction is ₹5000, and the monthly limit is ₹15000. The primary user can also revoke access immediately if needed. This feature is especially beneficial for families where not everyone has a bank account but needs to make digital payments.
How to Set Up UPI Circle
Open your UPI app, such as BHIM or Google Pay. Ensure you have the latest version of the app; check for updates first.
On the home screen or in the profile section, look for an option like UPI Circle or Family/Delegate Pay. The name might vary slightly depending on the app.
Open the UPI Circle section and tap on Add Family or Friends or Add Member.
Enter the UPI ID of the person you want to add or scan their QR code. An invite will be sent to the secondary user.
Now choose the payment permission mode.
If you choose Full Delegation, you can set monthly and per-transaction limits, allowing them to make payments without requiring approval every time.
If you choose Partial Delegation, you will receive an approval request before each payment.
Set the spending limits. Typically, the per-transaction limit can be set up to ₹5000 and the monthly limit up to ₹15000.
Finally, confirm the setup by entering your UPI PIN. The member will then be added.
What Happens After Setup
The secondary user will be able to make payments from their phone, but the limits and control will remain with you. You can view all transactions within the app and revoke access at any time if needed. A lower limit is applied to newly added users for the first 24 hours to ensure security.
