New Delhi: Sri Lanka suffered a major blow in the middle of the T20 World Cup 2026 after star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring tear.
Hasaranga sustained the injury during Sri Lanka’s opening game against Ireland in Colombo on Sunday.
Although the leg-spinner completed his spell, taking 3 for 25 in four overs to dent Ireland’s chase of 164, scans have revealed that he will no longer be available for the remainder of the T20 WC.
The severity of the injury came to light on Monday after an MRI scan on Monday revealed a serious tear in his left hamstring. The report was checked by a specialist in the UK before the call to rule the player out was taken.
Hasaranga is set to be replaced by fellow legspin allrounder Dushan Hemantha.
It will be interesting to see if Hemantha is straightaway drafted into the playing XI when Sri Lanka take on Oman in their second group game on February 12 in Pallekele.
The T20 World Cup co-hosts will face Australia on February 16 in Pallekele before closing their league campaign against Zimbabwe in Colombo (RPS) on February 19.
