Instagram may soon introduce an AI-powered face swap feature. This will allow users to create photos and videos using their own or someone else's likeness. Let's find out...

Instagram may soon launch a new AI-powered face swap feature, which could completely change the way videos and images are created. According to a tipster, the Meta platform is developing a tool that will allow users to generate photos and videos using their own or someone else's likeness. It is believed that this feature could be introduced to compete with OpenAI's Sora app. Although the company has not yet officially confirmed this feature, it has gained traction after leaked information on social media.

What else was revealed in the leak?

Tipster Alessandro Paluzzi posted on X that Instagram is working on an 'AI-powered face swap feature'. He also shared screenshots showing the feature, called "Create my Likeness." The screenshots indicate that users can have their digital identity, or face, created by default. It's unclear whether this data will be pulled from users' past posts and highlights or whether they will have to upload a separate selfie. Once a user's likeness is created, they can create photos and videos with AI by typing text prompts.

Sharing AI-generated content with friends

According to the report, users can share this AI-generated content with their friends via direct messages (DMs) or post it to their stories and feeds. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed. Interestingly, this feature could also allow the use of another user's likeness, but prior permission would be required. The screenshots show an "Invite" option, which allows for sending notifications or DMs to other users. Only if the person gives permission can their likeness be used to create AI content.

Problems like abuse and deepfakes

This permission-based system is being added to prevent misuse of someone's identity. This step is considered necessary given the current problems of misuse of AI technology and deepfakes. OpenAI's Sora app, meanwhile, takes a different approach, allowing users to block certain words or activities to prevent their likeness from being misused. It's currently unclear how Instagram will handle this issue. However, the company hasn't officially announced this feature, so it should be treated as a rumor for now. The full picture will only become clearer once Instagram confirms it in the future.
