Ex-Tottenham manager goes on Sky Sports and puts his name forward for job again

Tim Sherwood has thrown his name into contention for the Tottenham manager job, though only as a temporary solution. The former Spurs boss believes Mauricio Pochettino will ultimately be appointed as Thomas Frank's long-term replacement.

Less than 12 hours after Tottenham's disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle, the club confirmed Frank's departure on Wednesday morning. The north Londoners have managed just two victories in their previous 17 Premier League fixtures, leaving them precariously positioned only five points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham are now racing to secure a manager before next Sunday's crucial north London derby clash with Arsenal. Sherwood, 57, who has both played for and managed the club, has expressed his willingness to step back in.

"I think there's going to be a shortlist of people they could turn to," the retired midfielder told Sky Sports. "I genuinely believe they're going to give it to John Heitinga.

"He's the man there already, he's got experience as a manager. It didn't work out great for him, obviously, at Ajax, but Tottenham in the Premier League is a great opportunity for someone who is not in a job.

"It's a club I love, I know a lot about it and I've spent many years there in different capacities and it needs someone to give them a lift at the moment. Whether that's me or whoever they decide to bring in, they've got a tough job on their hands."

Nevertheless, Sherwood maintains that whoever takes charge next will merely serve as a temporary solution. This is because of the overwhelming demand for Pochettino's return.

Supporters made their wishes abundantly clear by chanting the Argentinian's name throughout the Newcastle loss. That's despite the fact it's been five years since his dismissal.

Pochettino, 53, is presently in charge of the United States national team following stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, and is set to guide the Americans through this summer's World Cup on home soil. Once that tournament concludes, though, the beloved former boss would likely be far more attainable as he's due to be out of contract.

"Let's face it, in the summer it's going to be Pochettino," Sherwood added. "It will be impossible or almost impossible for Tottenham to look beyond Mauricio Pochettino with the clamour from the Tottenham support to bring the man back to the club.

"Whoever is going in there is going in for 12 games plus that Champions League run, there's no future at the club for that person. So there will be very few who want to put their hands up and put themselves on offer for 12 games."
