The sub-4 meter SUV segment is steadily growing in popularity in India. The January 2026 sales report clearly demonstrates the growing adoption of sub-4 meter SUVs. Together, cars in this segment added a total of 121,150 new customers, compared to 106,969 units in January 2025. This represents a remarkable 13 percent year-on-year growth.

The Tata Nexon has once again maintained its dominance in this rapidly growing segment. Sales of the Tata Punch and Maruti Brezza have also seen significant growth. On the other hand, demand for some models, such as the Maruti Fronx and Hyundai Exter, has declined.

In January 2026, the Tata Nexon and Nexon EV together sold 23,365 units. This represents a strong year-on-year growth of 51.75 percent compared to 15,397 units sold in January 2025. This success of the Nexon makes it the best-selling SUV in its segment. With petrol, diesel, and electric options, the Nexon offers customers a wide range of choices, which is a major reason for its popularity.

The Tata Punch and Punch EV came in second place, selling 19,257 units in January 2026, an increase of 18.64 percent compared to 16,231 units sold last year. The Maruti Brezza came in third, selling 17,486 units, an increase of 18.57 percent compared to 14,737 units sold last year. Steady demand for the Brezza is keeping it strong in the segment.

There has been a decline in the sales of Maruti Fronx. In January 2026, 13,353 units were sold, which is 12 percent less than last year's 15,192 units. On the other hand, Hyundai Venue made its place in the top-5 by selling 12,413 units. This is an increase of 11.77 percent compared to last year's 11,106 units. Apart from these, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO/EV, Hyundai Exter, Skoda Kylaq, Toyota Taisor, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Maruti Jimny and Kia Syros also registered strong sales.
