An Indian couple’s Instagram dance reel filmed at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC has gone viral, drawing sharp criticism online, with many accusing the duo of disrespecting the historic site.
The video, shared widely on social media, shows the couple performing a dance routine at the memorial. Many users slammed the act, saying such places should be treated with solemnity.
“Social media trends move fast. History doesn’t. The WWII Memorial honors those who sacrificed across the world. India alone sent 2.5 million soldiers to fight and one of them was my grandfather. Memorials aren’t backdrops. They deserve respect,” an X user wrote while sharing the clip.
“This is extremely disrespectful to all Americans and their families who served in the armed forces and as civilians during World War II,” another user wrote.
“Some places deserve respect, not the IT department making socially awkward TikTok dances,” a third commented.
Some users even tagged the company where one of the individuals allegedly works, calling for action against them, while others used the incident to target Indians and H-1B visa holders.
According to several posts circulating online, the reel was reportedly shot by a Telugu couple. The video has since been deleted after the backlash intensified.
However, some social media users defended the couple, arguing that the reaction was excessive.
“87,000 Indians died fighting for the Allies in WWII. It’s a public monument and lots of people — including your compatriots — have wedding photoshoots and Instagram reels there. Indians need to stand up for themselves instead of self-flagellating over compatriots engaging in harmless self-expression,” one user wrote.
Another person wondered the motive behind targetting Indians, saying, "I guarantee there are other videos of white people, black people, descendants of the Pilgrims, all dancing by the WW2 memorial. That’s what silly people of all backgrounds do these days. Cherry-picking some South-Asian heritage dancers is you being racist."
The viral controversy comes at a time when the Trump administration has stepped up immigration enforcement, introducing tighter rules for both legal and illegal migration. Work visas such as the H-1B have faced stricter scrutiny and new conditions.
The H-1B visa allows US companies to employ skilled foreign professionals and is widely used by Indian workers to live and work in the United States.
