Hunsur: A 21-year-old camp elephant named ‘Zoo Abhi’, which was housed at the Mattigodu elephant camp in Nagarahole National Park, died on Sunday (March 8) after prolonged illness.
Zoo Abhi was part of the elephant capture operations carried out by the forest department and was stationed at the Mattigodu elephant camp.
According to forest officials, the elephant had suffered a knee injury after stepping into a small ditch while grazing. Following the incident, the animal was seen walking with difficulty.
Zoo Abhi had been suffering from leg pain for the past six months and was under treatment by veterinarian Dr Ramesh. However, the elephant died at the camp on Sunday evening as the treatment did not show improvement.
After conducting the post-mortem examination, the last rites were performed on Monday in the presence of senior forest officials.
Seema, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Lakshmikanth, Assistant Conservator of Forests, and Range Forest Officer Devaraj visited the spot along with other senior forest officials and inspected the site.
