Uncontrolled mice outbreak shuts down major UK fast food chain restaurant

An uncontrolled mouse outbreak has forced a major fast food chain to shut one restaurant. LEON, known for its fresh approach to fast food, has allegedly closed its branch at King's Cross station in London, one of the city's busiest transport hubs, due to out-of-control vermin.

A sign posted on the restaurant's door read: "We're closed whilst we make some improvements. We'll be back opening soon." However, consumer journalist Harry Wallop appears to have exposed a more sinister reason. He shared an image on X that appeared to show a Food Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice, issued by the London Borough of Camden.

The notice states there was an "active widespread uncontrolled mice infestation and mice activity throughout the premises including next to food equipment," which created an "imminent risk to public health".

Accompanying the image, Mr Wallop queried: "Leon, Kings Cross is closed so it can 'make some improvements'. Errr is that to 'Because there is an active widespread mice infestation' by any chance?"

The notice states it was issued on March 4, under Regulation 8 of the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2014.

This gives authorities the power to immediately shut a food business if conditions pose a serious danger to public health. The order means the building "cannot be used for the purpose of this or any other food business" until the issue is resolved.

John Vincent, who recently re-acquired LEON, commented: "Cleanliness of our restaurants is our number one priority. We are taking this seriously and working with our franchise partner AVOLTA and with Network Rail so we can fix the issue and re-open."

The first LEON store was opened in London's Carnaby Street in July 2004, and the business has since grown to more than 70 locations across the UK and Europe.

The "naturally fast food" chain, founded by John Vincent, Henry Dimbleby, and Allegra McEvedy, focuses on fast, nutritious, and sustainable meals.
