As March enters its second week, India is already experiencing scorching heat reminiscent of June. Northern regions are feeling the brunt of this early heatwave, with fans being switched on in homes and air conditioning units expected to follow soon. Maharashtra is also facing extreme temperatures, particularly in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and surrounding districts. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat warning valid until Wednesday, March 11. On Monday, temperatures in some metropolitan areas soared to nearly 40°C, significantly above normal levels due to hazy skies and minimal cloud cover, which have exacerbated daytime heat.
Yellow Alert Issued
In its latest forecast, the IMD has maintained a yellow alert for heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in parts of North Konkan and the larger Mumbai metropolitan area. The nighttime heat is causing discomfort, with coastal regions experiencing elevated minimum temperatures. The weather bulletin released on Monday stated, 'There is a high likelihood of heat and humidity in certain areas of the Mumbai metropolitan region.'
Record Highs and Rising Humidity
Data from the weather department indicates that under intense sunlight, temperatures in some areas have reached 40°C. The heat index values, which account for humidity, are making conditions feel even hotter. Local weather stations have recorded some of the highest temperatures for this time of year, leading to complaints of fatigue and excessive heat during the afternoons. A senior official from the IMD's regional meteorological center remarked, 'As temperatures and humidity rise, we urge everyone to take necessary precautions. This heatwave is significant as it has arrived early in the season and may persist until mid-week.'
Public Health Advisory
Public health and civic officials in Mumbai and surrounding districts are advising residents to limit outdoor activities between noon and 4 PM, stay hydrated, and pay special attention to vulnerable groups, especially children and the elderly. Residents have reported that the heat is already taking a toll. Abhay Shankar, commuting from Thane, noted, 'The weather feels hotter than usual in the early morning, and by 11 AM, it seems like the heat is at its peak. Keeping the AC running all day has become essential.'
Alerts and Forecasts for Districts
Beyond the Mumbai metropolitan area, the IMD has issued heatwave or hot and humid alerts for several districts, including Raigad, Nashik, Jalgaon, and Amravati, where temperatures are significantly above normal for this time of year. This heatwave is part of a larger weather pattern affecting western India, with some districts in Vidarbha already surpassing 40°C in recent days.
Preparations Underway
Municipal authorities in Mumbai have set up facilities to provide relief from the heat and have strengthened water supply points in heavily trafficked public areas. Schools and workplaces are being advised to adjust schedules to avoid the peak afternoon heat. A civic official stated, 'It is crucial for people to take responsibility and follow the advice given.'
As the heatwave is expected to persist throughout the week, forecasters suggest that conditions may ease slightly by Thursday, depending on changing wind patterns and cloud cover. However, for now, both officials and residents are bracing for several more days of extreme heat.
