NCERT publicly apologized and withdrew its Class 8 Social Science textbook. Let's explore the full story.
A major issue related to the country's education system is currently in the news. A controversial chapter on the judiciary in a Class 8 Social Science textbook escalated to the Supreme Court. Following the court's strong comments and the subsequent ban, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has publicly apologized unconditionally.
Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court completely banned the book. The court ordered the seizure of all printed copies of the book and the removal of its digital version from the internet. The court stated that such content could create a negative impression of the judiciary in the public mind.
Apology Published in Newspapers
Following the escalation of the issue, NCERT published an apology advertisement in several leading newspapers across the country. The apology stated that a social science book titled "Exploring Society: India and Beyond (Part-II)" was recently published for Class 8. The fourth chapter of this book was titled "The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society."
In the apology, the NCERT Director and other members stated that they unconditionally and completely apologize for the content published in this chapter. The Council also clarified that the entire book has been withdrawn and is no longer available anywhere.
What was the controversy in the chapter?
Actually, a section of this book discussed "corruption in the judiciary." When media reports surfaced, the matter quickly gained attention. The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and called it a serious issue. Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed strong displeasure. He stated that no one would be allowed to tarnish the reputation of the judiciary. He stated unequivocally that no matter how high-ranking a person is, the law will take its course.
Supply of the book was immediately halted
Following the controversy, NCERT immediately halted the distribution of the book. Officials admitted that some inappropriate material had been included in the chapter. They stated that this was a "wrong decision" and that the material had inadvertently entered the book. NCERT also stated that an investigation was underway to determine how the material was included in the book.
Court Issues Strict Orders
The Supreme Court took strict action in this matter and completely banned the book. The court ordered that all printed copies of the book be confiscated and all versions available online be removed. The court also stated that a thorough investigation was necessary. If such cases were ignored, people's trust in the justice system could be eroded. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central Government, appeared in court and apologized on behalf of the Ministry of Education.
