The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) recently decided to withdraw a new Class 8 social science textbook titled "Exploring Society: India and Beyond" and publicly apologize for the controversial chapter. This decision was made following a controversy that erupted following a significant backlash over the chapter titled "The Role of Judiciary in Our Society."
Chapter IV of the book highlighted challenges facing the judiciary, such as corruption, a massive backlog of cases, a shortage of judges, and other sensitive issues. This detailed account of the judiciary sparked debates about the court's dignity and fueled controversy.
NCERT stated in a press release that the chapter, which contained "inappropriate textual content and an authorization error," was accidentally included in the book. The Council stated that it had no intention of undermining the reputation of any constitutional institution and sincerely apologized for the mistake.
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance.
It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court, taking suo motu cognizance, issued strong remarks, stating that any content that damages the image of a constitutional institution like the judiciary is unacceptable. The Court virtually banned the book and ordered the recall of all copies. A further hearing is scheduled for March 11.
Responding to the Controversy
NCERT stated, "We regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate the understanding of all stakeholders."
This decision comes at a time when school textbooks and their portrayal of constitutional institutions are under increasing scrutiny. Education experts say that NCERT books are taught in central and state government-affiliated schools across India, so any changes or deletions to chapters impact both students and teachers.
Further clarification is awaited from the Council regarding the updated curriculum plan for the upcoming academic session.
