Importance of earthen pot in summer

New Delhi: During the summer season, many people become victims of sore throat or cold by drinking cold water from the refrigerator. To avoid this problem, the use of earthen pots is becoming popular again. This keeps the water naturally cool and the alkaline properties of the soil help balance the pH level of the body. However, the true benefits of the pot are available only when it is cleaned and cared for properly.

Even the slightest carelessness can lead to the growth of bacteria, germs or mold, increasing the risk of stomach ache, vomiting or infection. Let us know about those five mistakes which should be avoided.

Do not clean with soap or detergent

The pot should be emptied every 2-3 days and washed thoroughly with only clean water. Do not use soap, detergent or any chemical substance, as the pores of the soil absorb their residues. These chemicals can be harmful to health when mixed with water. Instead try natural cleaning using warm water or lemon.

Do not dip hands or glass directly

Avoid putting your hand or glass in the pot to take out water, as this increases the risk of spreading bacteria and dirt. Always use a vessel with a long handle or a pot with a tap. This method prevents infection and keeps the water pure.

never expose to sunlight

Keeping the pot in direct sunlight heats the water and may weaken the natural properties of the soil. Keep it in a cool and shady place in the house. Wrapping with a wet sack or cloth increases evaporation, which keeps the water cooler and tastier.

Do not stir old pot for years

Even an earthen pot has a lifespan. With time its pores become clogged, which reduces the cooling effect and bacteria start accumulating. For better health, a new pot should be taken every year or two. Mold or dirt easily hides in old pots.

Don’t ignore the lid

Always cover the pot with a tightly fitting lid, plate or clean cloth. Due to this, dust, soil, mosquitoes or insects do not fall into the water. Also clean the lid regularly, as a dirty lid can contaminate the entire water.
