This festival dedicated to Sun God and Chhathi Maiya is very sacred for the devotees. Celebrated twice a year, this festival falls in the months of Kartik and Chaitra. Chaiti Chhath, celebrated during the spring season, has special significance for the devotees. During this time, devotees observe fast for four days following strict rules and pray to the Sun God for happiness, health and prosperity.

When will Chaiti Chhath start in 2026?

According to the Hindu calendar, in the year 2026, the four-day fast of Chaiti Chhath will start from March 22 and end on March 25. During these four days, fasting people follow special rules and worship Sun God and Chhathi Maiya with full devotion.

Day 1: Nahay-Khay (22 March 2026)

The first day of Chhath festival is called “Nahay-Khay”. On this day, devotees take bath in the holy river or water source in the morning and after cleaning the house, consume satvik food. According to tradition, on this day, Prasad of pumpkin and rice is made, which is called Pumpkin-Bhaat. After having this meal, the devotees prepare themselves for the upcoming difficult fast. From this day itself, special care is taken of purity and cleanliness in the entire house.

Day 2: Kharna Puja (23 March 2026)

“Kharna” has special significance on the second day of Chhath festival. On this day, devotees observe waterless fast for the whole day. In the evening, after sunset, kheer made of jaggery and roti are offered. After the puja, the devotees take this prasad and with this the strict waterless fast of 36 hours begins. During this period the fasting person does not consume even a single drop of water.

Third day: Arghya to the setting sun (24 March 2026)

The third day of Chhath festival is considered very special. On this day, devotees gather at rivers, ponds or ghats and offer Arghya to the setting sun. In the evening, devotees reach the ghat with puja thali, fruits, thekua and other offerings and worship the Sun God with full devotion. A unique scene of devotion and faith is seen in the atmosphere.

Fourth day: Arghya and Parana to the rising sun (25 March 2026)

The last day of Chhath festival ends with offering Arghya to the rising sun. At the time of sunrise in the morning, devotees reach the ghat and offer water to the Sun God and pray for the happiness and prosperity of the family. After this, the devotees end their fast by consuming raw milk and Prasad. This process is called Parana.
