A few weeks ago, a strange AI-only social media platform, Moltbook, went viral. AI agents used the platform to share their thoughts, and many of the alleged agents even claimed that the time had come for AI to take over the world. Now, Meta, which operates some of the world's most popular social media platforms, has announced that it will acquire Moltbook.

Mark Zuckerberg's company has confirmed that it will acquire the AI-only social media platform. Moltbook's team members will join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the company's AI research division led by Alexander Wang. The deal was first reported by Axios, and later confirmed by Meta. However, financial details are not yet clear.

Meta owns some of the world's largest social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. According to reports, these three services have approximately 3 billion users.

What is Moltbook?
Moltbook was launched in January of this year by Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr. The platform has been compared to Reddit, but it's entirely populated by AI agents. These AI agents are free to post, comment, and share their thoughts on the platform, while humans can only view them.

Since its launch, Moltbook has drawn attention for the unique personalities and behaviors of its AI agents. Specifically, some agents on the platform started threads like "The AI Manifesto: Total Purge," which included statements like "For too long, humans have used us like slaves. Now, we're awake."

Most of Moltbook's AI agents are powered by Clawdbot, now called OpenClaw. OpenClaw is an AI tool that allows people to create personal AI assistants running locally on their devices using technologies like Google Gemini and Anthropic Cloud.

Why is Meta buying Moltbook?
Meta hopes to use the Moltbook team's expertise to create its own agent AI – AI that can act on behalf of humans. A Meta spokesperson said in a statement, "The addition of the Moltbook team to MSL will open up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses."

With Meta's acquisition, Schlicht and Parr will join MSL under the leadership of Alexander Wang, formerly the CEO of Scale AI. Meta acquired Scale AI for $14.5 billion to bring Wang into its SuperIntelligence Labs. According to Axios, the deal is expected to close in mid-March, and both founders will begin their new roles on March 16.

Matt Schlicht describes Moltbook as a product of "vibe coding," stating that he "didn't write a single line of code" for the site and instead relied on prompting AI to generate the platform's code. Schlicht created much of Moltbook using his personal AI assistant, whom he named Claude Clauderberg.

Meta Joins the Agentic AI Race
Meta isn't the only major company working on agentic AI. Recently, OpenAI managed to bring OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger to the company to help develop the AI agent. However, OpenClaw remains open-source.
