During the summer season, air conditioners (ACs) are no longer just a luxury item; they have become essential. Often, people buy ACs based solely on price, but later face problems like high electricity bills, poor cooling, or a lack of features.
Therefore, it's crucial to understand some important considerations before purchasing a new AC. In today's world, inverter technology, star ratings, cooling capacity, coolant gas, and condenser, along with features like AI (Artificial Intelligence), are making ACs smarter and more efficient.
Price Range
When purchasing a new AC, people often first decide on their budget and then search for a model accordingly. This is a good approach, but sometimes, budgeting is not the right approach. By increasing your budget slightly, you can get an AC with a better brand, higher power efficiency, better cooling, and additional smart features.
For example, if you're considering buying an AC for ₹30,000, you can often spend ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 more to get a 4-star or 5-star rated model, which can save energy in the long run. So, set a budget, but don't treat it like a "lakshman rekha."
Room Size
The capacity of an AC, or tonnage, is the most important aspect. It determines how quickly and effectively it will cool the room. If you purchase an AC with a capacity smaller than the room's size, it will take longer to cool the room and consume more electricity.
Typically, a 1-ton AC is sufficient for a small room, while a 1.5-ton AC is a better option for a medium-sized room. Larger rooms or hallways may require a 2-ton AC. If your room is on the top floor or receives direct sunlight, it's always better to choose a slightly higher capacity.
Window and Split ACs
When purchasing an AC, many people are unsure whether to purchase a window or a split AC. Both types have their own advantages and limitations. Window ACs are generally cheaper and easier to install. If your room has a window or wall where a window AC can be easily installed, it can be an economical option.
Split ACs, on the other hand, are more modern, stylish, and feature-rich. They offer better cooling and lower noise. Furthermore, most smart and AI features are also available in split ACs these days. Therefore, if budget and space are available, this may prove to be a better option.
Power Consumption and Ratings
When purchasing an AC, its energy efficiency should not be overlooked, as it lasts longer and consumes a lot of electricity. In India, the energy efficiency of an AC is indicated by its star rating.
3-star, 4-star, and 5-star rated ACs are available in the market. Among these, 5-star ACs are the most energy-efficient, while 4-star ACs are also quite economical. If you plan to use the AC for a long time, purchasing a model with a 5-star rating may prove to be preferable.
Inverter and Non-Inverter ACs
Most air conditioners today come with inverter technology. In inverter ACs, the compressor adjusts its speed as needed, maintaining a stable room temperature and reducing power consumption.
In contrast, in non-inverter ACs, the compressor operates in an on-off mode. When the room temperature rises, the compressor turns on, and when the temperature drops, it turns off. This results in higher power consumption. Therefore, inverter ACs are considered a better option for long-term use.
AI Features
Air conditioners are also becoming smarter. Many companies are offering AI, or artificial intelligence-based features, in their new AC models. These features automatically adjust cooling based on room conditions and usage.
For example, the AI Auto Cooling feature automatically adjusts the cooling mode based on the room's temperature and humidity levels. Similarly, the AI Energy Saving Mode helps reduce power consumption. Many AI ACs also have a Smart Sleep Mode feature, which gradually adjusts the temperature according to the body's comfort during the night.
Some modern ACs also have an AI Presence Detection feature, which reduces cooling when no one is present in the room to save power. Furthermore, with WiFi connectivity and mobile app control, you can control the AC from your smartphone.
R32 Coolant Gas
The cooling of an AC depends largely on its coolant, or refrigerant gas. Nowadays, the use of R32 coolant gas is rapidly increasing in new air conditioners. R32 gas is considered relatively less harmful to the environment and less damaging to the ozone layer.
Furthermore, it is more effective in cooling and provides better energy efficiency. Therefore, it is better to choose a model with R32 coolant when purchasing a new AC.
Copper Condenser AC
The condenser is also very important for the longevity of an AC. Both copper and aluminum condensers are available in the market, but copper condensers are considered more durable and reliable.
ACs with copper condensers are less prone to corrosion and have better cooling capacity. Furthermore, they are also easier to clean and repair. Therefore, it is better to choose a model with a copper condenser when purchasing an AC.
Cooling Capacity
When purchasing an AC, people often only look at the 1-ton or 1.5-ton capacity, but the actual cooling capacity is measured in watts. For example, two different 1.5-ton ACs may have different cooling capacities.
One AC may provide 4400 watts of cooling capacity, while another may provide up to 5200 watts. An AC with a higher cooling capacity will cool the room faster and perform better. Therefore, when purchasing an AC, consider its cooling capacity in addition to the tonnage.
Filters and Smart Features
Modern air conditioners also come equipped with various air filters that help keep the air clean. These filters are especially useful in large cities where dust and pollution are high.
Some ACs offer options like dust filters, PM 2.5 filters, and anti-bacterial filters. Additionally, features like Wi-Fi connectivity, voice command support, and smart home integration are also available in many models.
If you buy an AC keeping all these things in mind, you can get better cooling, lower electricity bills, and reliable performance for a long time.
