Former Australia Legend Fears Jasprit Bumrah May Focus Only on White-Ball Cricket

The Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has expressed his worry about the high workload that India’s main fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah faces following the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 tournament.

Bumrah performed exceptionally throughout the tournament and finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker. The Indian pacer took 14 wickets with an average of 12.42 and a 6.21 economy rate. He also played a key role in the final against New Zealand  and was named Player of the Final.

McGrath believes that the fast bowler requires specific handling methods for his increasing workload when he reaches advanced age.

McGrath Shows Concern About Bumrah Playing Back to Back Tests

McGrath spoke about Bumrah while appearing on the Fast Bowling Cartel YouTube channel. The legendary Australian pacer praised Bumrah’s unique style but questioned how long he can continue playing consecutive Test matches.

McGrath said:

"My concern, as he's a little bit older now, is that playing back-to-back Test matches is getting tougher for him. Is he going to just start focusing on white-ball cricket? That'll be a massive loss to Test cricket if he did. We might only see him rarely in Test matches, maybe against an Australia."

McGrath praised Bumrah’s abilities to defeat all batsmen across every format of cricket.

He Added:

"Just how good is he. When he comes on, he looks completely different to every other fast bowler. Batters try to lineup every other bowler when they are set, but not him. What I like about Bumrah is how he bowls the really good Test match length successfully in T20s. His other variations are all brilliant as well. He is just a gun."

Damien Fleming Praises Bumrah’s Unique Bowling

Damien Fleming another former Australian fast bowler acknowledged Bumrah's World Cup performance through his recognition of the bowler's skills. Fleming said the Indian pacer keeps improving with every major tournament.

Damien Fleming said:

"That slower ball of his is like a curveball in Baseball. It's absolutely brilliant. You think with these great fast bowlers, when do they plateau? Bumrah, with each big tournament or big series, is enhancing his reputation. When will it ever stop? He is an absolute freak, Jasprit Bumrah."

Fleming showed particular admiration for Bumrah's final match slower delivery which left numerous batters in a state of confusion.

Focus on Workload before 2027 ODI World Cup

Bumrah has experienced multiple injuries during the past few years which resulted in his absence from various Test matches. The Indian management decided to implement tighter control of his playing time because of the situation.

The upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 will see the team use him only for crucial Test and 50-over matches.

Bumrah will participate in the IPL 2026 season with Mumbai Indians before he resumes his international cricket career.

The Indian management which includes VVS Laxman, Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill will determine Bumrah's future workload requirements through their IPL post tournament discussions.

India will face their next Test match against the Afghanistan. The team will later travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series in August.
