The Union Home Minister asserted that the motion of no confidence brought by the opposition against the Speaker of the Lok Sabha is not a common occurrence but a very regrettable matter Amit Shah has done After almost four decades, such a proposal has been tabled in Parliament. “Speaker is not only of one party but of the entire House and he is the custodian of the rights of the members,” Shah condemned the opposition’s stance.

It is wrong to doubt the highest panchayat head of a democracy

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Amit Shah said, “Lok Sabha is the largest panchayat of democracy in the country. Indian democracy has a reputation in the world. When the head of this panchayat and his loyalty are questioned, our democratic system is questioned in front of the whole world. There may be disagreement on the President’s decision, but questioning his loyalty is like attacking the roots of democracy.”

‘A house is not a fair’; Compliance with rules is mandatory

Commenting on the proceedings of the House, Shah reminded the opposition of the rules. He said, “Parliament is not a fair, where anyone can do whatever they like. The House is based on mutual trust and there are certain rules for that. If someone violates the rules, the Speaker has full authority to stop, reprimand and expel him on occasion. These rules are not made by us today but from the time of Pandit Nehru.”

If there is no discipline, the mic will be closed!

Responding to allegations of ‘mic bandh’ by the opposition, the Home Minister said, “While speaking in the House, every member is expected to speak through the speaker. If there is a breach of discipline, the speaker has the power to switch off the mic. It is the constitutional responsibility of the speaker to adjourn the House, suspend members or remove unparliamentary words in case of serious disorder. It is not in keeping with parliamentary etiquette for women MPs to gather slogans up to PM Modi’s chair.”

A historic but sad event after four decades

Citing historical references, Shah said that BJP was sitting in the opposition for a long time, but we never moved a no-confidence motion against the President. So far only three times such a proposal has come up, and each time it has been a blow to the dignity of democracy. 42 MPs gave their views in this discussion which lasted for more than 10 hours. He also recalled that during the appointment of the President, both the ruling party and the opposition had seated him, which meant that he had the support of all.
