Kundapur police have arrested a woman for allegedly forcing a 65-year-old man from the Koraga community into bonded labour for nearly 30 years without wages.
The accused, identified as Rajani Shetty, allegedly kept the victim, Naga from Kanyana village, as a bonded labourer at her house in Kabbailu of Hemmady.
The police team led by Kundapur DySP H.D. Kulkarni arrested the accused and produced her before a court, which remanded her to judicial custody. She has been lodged in the Mangaluru district prison.
According to the complaint, the victim was forced to clean cattle sheds, remove dung, clean the house toilet and perform other chores. He was reportedly made to live in the cattle shed and was forced to keep his food, utensils and clothes there.
He was also allegedly forced to eat in the same place and was made to work continuously for three decades without pay.
Additional SP Sudhakar S. Nayak visited the house where the incident occurred and gathered information. Officials from the Social Welfare Department, Labour Department and other local authorities were present during the visit.
Authorities have been instructed to take steps to rehabilitate the victim.
