Guwahati, March 12: On Thursday, a total of 5,690 candidates in the education field were handed their appointment letters, bringing the overall number of government jobs created in Assam to 164,359. This achievement exceeds the government's initial commitment to generate one lakh jobs.
During a ceremony at the Veterinary Playground in Khanapara, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed that this milestone demonstrates the government's dedication to providing employment opportunities for the youth while enhancing the state's educational framework.
“We had pledged to create one lakh government jobs, and today we have surpassed that goal by offering over 1.64 lakh positions,” stated the Chief Minister.
“Even if we had only met a fraction of our promise, it might have satisfied the public. However, we aimed to exceed expectations and provide more opportunities for Assam's youth,” he added.
Looking to the future, the Chief Minister revealed plans to further increase the teaching staff in the upcoming years.
“In the next five years, we intend to recruit an additional 65,000 teachers to ensure that every child in Assam has access to quality education,” he mentioned.
The Chief Minister also stressed that the recruitment process was conducted transparently and without corruption.
“All appointments were made through a merit-based and transparent process, leaving no room for bribery or unfair practices. Previous administrations managed to provide only 20,000 to 25,000 jobs during their terms, but we have significantly broadened recruitment,” he noted.
According to government data, the recent appointments cover various roles within the education sector.
This includes 3,515 teachers for higher secondary schools, 116 individuals appointed to upgraded teacher positions from 2021, and 197 candidates for upgraded roles as science and graduate teachers in upper primary schools.
Additionally, 446 teachers were appointed in provincialised higher secondary schools, along with 177 assistant professors in higher education institutions and four principals of engineering colleges.
The Chief Minister further highlighted the substantial growth of the teaching workforce over the last five years.
“In the past five years, nearly 95,000 teachers have been recruited throughout Assam, marking one of the largest recruitment initiatives in the state's educational history,” he stated.
Sarma also mentioned that the government is implementing reforms and technology-driven strategies to enhance the education system and improve learning outcomes.
“We are empowering the education sector by introducing modern educational technologies to make the system more transparent and efficient. Consequently, dropout rates have decreased, and public trust in the state's education system is on the rise,” he concluded.
